When the cold air just above the sea's surface cools the warm air above it until it can no longer hold moisture, a fog forms. Yesterday evening, after a hot day, a thick mist descended upon the River Torridge estuary at Appledore in North Devon. At dawn the sun slowly begins to burn through the drifting layers.
